"arts stand"
pavilion design
2018
this site is situated adjacent to the national arts center and across from the shaw center in downtown ottawa, ontario.
introducing a pavilion to this space it allows mixed uses for arts and culture purposes in a smaller and more intimate setting. as well, it further extends the dialog of arts and culture in the area.
the curvilinear design of the structure is influenced by the canal's fluid nature and also provides different spatial settings for both small and large gatherings.the space is designed to be used during all seasons. since ottawa turns the canal into a skating rink in the winter, it was important to design this pavilion to be multi functional (especially during the skating season).
the first level includes various covered sitting and dining areas, some swing sets for all seasons, and warming stations in the winter.
the second floor of the pavilion is dedicated for small performances on a platform, but also a space for additional gathering spaces. it allows various views of downtown ottawa.
